Power Outages

From our Electric Department

WHAT TO DO IF WE HAVE POWER OUTAGES

We inform customers about planned power outages.  For unplanned power outages, power restoration times will vary as we diligently work to find the cause of the problem and make the necessary repairs.

What to do when there is a power outage:
1. During a power outage if you experience a medical emergency dial 911.
2. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.  Food in the refrigerator will stay
approximately six to nine hours without spoiling and frozen foods will stay
approximately 24 hours in the freezer.
3. Disconnect sensitive appliances (example microwaves, televisions and computers) to
prevent any potential power surge which may occur when power is restored.
4. Items you may want to have at home for a power outage: medical supplies; a battery
powered radio or a hand crank radio; battery powered alarm clock; flashlight with
batteries; cell phone.

Power Outage Update

The Village of Solvay has experienced three power outage’s, the first on Friday evening and the second on Saturday.

We are in the process of building a new substation.  All power is transferred to one substation while this is being completed.  We have been in the process of balancing the electrical loads on the different distribution feeders.  We also have many people that utilize electrical heat in there home’s which is now being turn on.  When a heavy electrical drain on the system occurs, without the Electric Department informed, this will cause an outage on the feeders.  We feel that we have corrected this problem at this time.

The third outage, that occurred on Tuesday morning was not related to this at all.  We had a major fault and then failure on one of our main lines caused by equipment failure in parts of the Village lasting for 2 hours.

Please note, there are many safety procedures that we must take to protect our employees working on the high intensity electrical lines and everyone must realize, safety comes first.

Thank You for your patience,

Have a Great Christmas!

John Montone, Superintendent

MAYOR’S MESSAGE FOR January 2012

THE VILLAGE BOARD AND I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON.  IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT ANOTHER YEAR HAS PASSED.

2012 HAS ALREADY STARTING OUT TO BE A VERY BUSY YEAR.  WE HAVE HAD POWER OUTAGES, FLOODING AND A FEW MINOR PROBLEMS.  WE HAVE MET WITH ASSEMBLYMAN WILLIAM MAGNARELLI, THE CITY OF SYRACUSE AND THE TOWN OF GEDDES REGARDING THE FLOODING ON MONTROSE AVENUE AND WE ARE FORMULATING PLANS TO CORRECT THIS FLOODING.  GRANTS HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED TO HELP WITH SOME OF THESE PROJECTS.  WE CAN ONLY HOPE THE GRANTS ARE AWARDED TO SOLVAY.

WE HAVE STARTED WITH THE ANNUAL BUDGET PROCESS.  WE ARE WORKING WITH EVERY DEPARTMENT HEAD ON WAYS TO MAINTAIN OUR VILLAGE SERVICES AND TRIM COST WHERE NECESSARY.  WE HAVE BEEN VERY LUCKY WITH THE WEATHER THUS FAR AND HOPE THIS WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE WINTER SEASON.  YOUR HELP AND COOPERATION MAINTAINING THE SIDEWALKS IN FRONT OF YOUR PROPERTY WILL GREATLY BE APPRECIATED.

WE WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED ON OUR PROGRESS AND HOPE 2012 WILL BE A GREAT YEAR!

SINCERELY,
MAYOR KATHY MARINELLI
